End Strong, Begin Fresh, and… Permission to Hover

End Strong, Begin Fresh, and… Permission to Hover

As the year comes to a close, it’s a natural time to feel stretched—juggling work deadlines, managing holiday plans, avoiding doomscrolling, and everything in between. Many of the leaders I know have been and are still pushing through exhaustion while trying to stay productive. Just a reminder before we step into the holiday season: consistently high performance isn’t about just grinding harder. It’s also about finding a balance between effort and recovery…and refueling.  And, of course, this season is also a chance to shift gears, take a breath, and refill for what lies ahead.

Think about elite athletes. When they even slightly pull a muscle, they don’t push through and risk long-term damage. They (and the whole system around them) ensure that they take the time to recover and fully heal so they can perform at their best when it matters most.

Another example is butterflies. They rest when it rains because water damages their wings. They understand that if they rest during the storm, they will fly lightly when it’s over.

It’s the same principle in leadership. Recovery isn’t a luxury, it’s essential; it’s an investment in the energy and focus we need to lead, grow, and thrive We need to constantly balance intensity with rest.

The holiday season is a wonderful time to weave small but meaningful practices into your routine that can bring both joy and renewal and reset your energy. Here is a reminder of some simple things to try:

  • 2-Minute Breaks: Step away for a couple of minutes to breathe deeply, stretch, or simply pause. These micro-breaks can help clear your mind and ease stress.
  • Gratitude Journaling and Speaking: Write down whatever’s on your mind—whether it’s ideas, to-dos, or things you’re grateful for.  Better yet, express them out loud, and watch the ripple effect. Do it regularly and immediately. This allows your brain to be more present in the everyday joys around you and can refocus your energy and inspire fresh ideas.
  • Move Your Body: Whether it’s a brisk walk, some stretching, or a day outdoors, movement can clear your mind, boost your mood, and leave you feeling energized.  And better yet – do it with your loved ones.
  • Detox from Social Media: Free up your mind to be present to what’s around.

The holidays are about connection, celebration, and renewal. I encourage you to take a real break—not just to rest, but to reflect on the past year, reconnect with what energizes you, and set yourself up for a strong start to 2025.

What’s one small step you can take today to feel more balanced and refreshed?

Wishing you a season filled with peace, joy, and renewal!

Best,
