Many people misunderstand the concept of “recharging your batteries.” They think simply taking a break from working is enough to recharge. But think about it: when your phone needs recharging, you can’t just set it aside for a few hours and expect it to be ready to go. You need to plug it into a power source – specifically, one that works for that model – with the right voltage, amperage, and adapter.
Humans are no different. We don’t just need to numb out—we need to recharge, rejuvenate, revitalize, and refresh ourselves in a way that works for us but might not for others. Why? Because if we want to navigate our lives with grace and flow, it is critical to stay connected to ourselves and to remain energized and focused.
The concept of ease and flow, derived from ancient wisdom, implies a state in which actions are effortless and natural, aligned with one’s true purpose and the broader currents of life. This means living with poise and tranquility rather than constant hustle and strain. Achieving this state requires a deliberate “resetting to neutral” in mindset and habits.
Summer is the Time to Reset!
When you’re on vacation, downtime is far from unproductive: it’s a critical period for reflection, creativity, and rejuvenation; it allows the brain to consolidate information, form new connections, and generate innovative ideas. Two Super Easy Things You Can Do To Help This Process:
- Dedicate time every day for reflection and introspection: This could be through quiet contemplation over a cup of coffee, journaling, painting, or just sitting still. Even five minutes a day can make a difference.
- Allocate specific periods in your schedule for activities that rejuvenate you: Whether it’s reading, walking, working out, dancing, cooking, spending time with family, or engaging in a hobby. It’s okay to tell your family and friends you need some “you” time! One of my clients finds the thrill of motorbiking rejuvenating (that’s her motorbike above!). Another one finds crocheting very centering, look what magic she creates!
Taking this time allows you to revitalize your mental, emotional, and cognitive batteries. It reaches parts of your brain that are hard to access when you’re in a “busy” frame of mind. I view this as a critical investment in supporting and expanding one’s intellectual capital because it enhances creativity and problem-solving skills, helps us see fresh perspectives, and most importantly, helps us stay grounded and be more intentional and focused.
And this, after all, is what leads to a more balanced, fulfilled life aligned with my values.
